Self-cooling pet mat solution

Pet Comfort & Summer Heat Relief Innovation

The Challenge
“Our gel cooling mats stop working after 20 minutes — and pets just walk away.”

A US-based pet products brand was losing ground to cheaper gel pad competitors. Their existing cooling mats relied on passive gel technology that absorbed body heat quickly but had no recovery mechanism — once saturated, the mat became warm and useless. On hot summer days above 30°C, the product failed exactly when pets needed it most. They needed a cooling solution that could keep up with the heat, not just delay it.
Our Innovation Journey
1
Understanding How Pets Lose Heat
Unlike humans, dogs and cats cannot sweat across their body surface. They rely heavily on conductive cooling — pressing their belly and paws against cool surfaces. A mat that loses its cooling capacity within minutes doesn’t just fail as a product; it actively misleads the pet’s thermoregulation instinct. The fabric surface temperature needed to stay consistently below the pet’s core body temperature (38–39°C) for extended periods.
2
Rethinking Cooling as a Two-Way Process
Gel pads cool in one direction — they absorb heat until full, then stop. PCM (Phase Change Material) technology works differently: micro-encapsulated PCM capsules embedded in the fiber absorb heat as they melt (solid → liquid), then release that stored heat back to the environment as they re-solidify. This creates a continuous thermal exchange cycle, not a one-time absorption event. The fabric essentially resets itself as ambient conditions allow.

Engineering for Pet-Specific Demands
SkinKey® PCM fabric — 92% PCM-infused PA 70D/48F FDY + 8% Spandex at 170gsm — was selected for its precise phase-change activation range aligned with pet body temperature. The nylon base provides the soft, smooth surface texture that encourages pets to stay on the mat. The 8% spandex content gives the fabric four-way stretch, allowing it to conform to the mat’s quilted structure without puckering or losing loft after repeated machine washing.
4
Solving the Durability & Washability Problem
Pet products face a brutal reality: claws, saliva, outdoor dirt, and weekly machine washes. PCM microcapsules in SkinKey® fabric are permanently bonded within the fiber structure — not surface-coated — meaning the thermal regulation function survives repeated wash cycles without degradation. The 170gsm weight provides enough fabric mass to hold meaningful PCM content while remaining lightweight enough for easy transport and storage.
The Result: SkinKey® PCM Quilted Pet Cooling Mat
