Luca, an outdoor enthusiast and product designer, faced a common frustration: traditional down jackets were either too bulky for urban wear or not warm enough for extreme cold. He envisioned a sleek, lightweight jacket with aerospace-grade insulation that could transition seamlessly from city streets to mountain trails.

Understanding the Thermal Paradox
Traditional insulation works by trapping air in thick layers. More warmth = more bulk. Down jackets achieve warmth through loft, but this creates the “puffy” look. Synthetic fills are flatter but require multiple layers, adding weight. We needed to break this thickness-warmth correlation.

Discovering Aerogel: The World’s Best Insulator
Aerogel, nicknamed “frozen smoke,” is 99.8% air and was originally developed by NASA for space suits. With a thermal conductivity of just 0.013 W/m·K (lower than still air!), a 3mm aerogel layer outperforms 25mm of down insulation. The challenge? Making it flexible, durable, and wearable.

Engineering Textile-Grade Aerogel
We developed ShowarmX® technology: silica aerogel particles encapsulated in flexible polyester fibers. This creates a breathable, machine-washable fabric that maintains aerogel’s insulation properties while allowing natural body movement. The fabric is only 1-3mm thick yet provides warmth equivalent to 30mm traditional insulation.

Optimizing for Real-World Performance
Beyond warmth, we engineered moisture management and wind resistance. The aerogel structure naturally wicks perspiration while blocking wind chill. Strategic placement of aerogel panels in core body zones maximizes thermal efficiency without restricting movement in arms and shoulders.
