Is Aerogel Only for Winter? Understanding Thermal-Buffer Technology

Aerogel is often described simply as a “warming material.” That description is incomplete.

Aerogel does not generate heat. Its fundamental role is insulation: slowing the transfer of thermal energy between two environments.

Thermal insulation works in both directions.

In cold conditions, this can help slow the loss of body heat to the surrounding air. When the environment is hotter than the body, the same insulating principle can help slow external heat from reaching the wearer.

Key distinction: Aerogel should not be understood only as a winter technology. It is better understood as a thermal-buffer technology. The goal is not to make every garment hotter — it is to make changes in the surrounding environment feel less immediate, giving the clothing system more time to manage the transition.

Of course, insulation alone does not guarantee summer comfort. During intense activity, the body also needs to release internally generated heat and moisture. Fiber proportion, yarn count, fabric structure, weight and air permeability must therefore be engineered for the intended application.

This is what turns an insulation material into an all-season textile concept: not aerogel by itself, but aerogel used in the right amount, within the right yarn and fabric construction.

What Does Far-Infrared Fiber Actually Do Beyond Warming?

Far-infrared technology is also frequently reduced to one message: warming. Its more interesting potential lies in the interaction between the textile and the body.

FIR-emitting fibers are designed to absorb part of the energy naturally released by the body and re-emit energy within the far-infrared spectrum. This technology is widely explored in wellness, comfort and recovery-oriented textiles.

Research continues into how specific FIR-emitting materials may influence localized skin temperature, perfusion and physiological comfort. However, those effects are material- and product-specific. For this reason, we position FIR as a wellness- and recovery-inspired textile technology, not as a medical treatment.

Within our three-in-one yarn, FIR adds a different dimension to thermal design. Aerogel focuses on the exchange between the body and the external environment. FIR focuses on the energy relationship closer to the body. One helps manage external thermal change. The other supports an internal, body-responsive comfort story.
